INTERVIEW
1) Can you tell The M.F.I.C members a little bit about yourself?
I am currently married, own a Specialty Fitness Store, Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Nutritionist.
2) What were your initial motivations for transforming your body?
My dedication to health began in April 2003. I was 43 years old and felt much, much older. Several family members had died from cancer and other diseases. Watching family members getting sicker, including some friends that were even younger than me, made me question my own health.
At this point I was so sick I didn't want to get off the couch, wondering if I wanted to even be alive at 60. I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, acid reflux, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Diabetes 2, arthritis, allergies, and a chronic cough. I was on six medications, tired all the time with no energy to do anything active. At 240 pounds I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.
All I had was my children, and unless I made a U-turn I wasn't going to be around for them. I started doing resistance weight training, cardio, and began changing my diet. My eating habits were horrible, consisting mainly of fast food, Chinese food, and subs, which resulted in a lack of fruits and vegetables. This is called the Standard American Diet, or SAD (ironic acronym huh?).
3) How long have you been on your program for and what kind of success have you experienced so far?
5 years. I was on 6 medications and now I have none of the previous illness and am drug free. I feel AWESOME. I am considering entering a bodybuilding contest in about a year.
4) How has this success changed your day-to-day life for the better?
Every day I feel AWESOME. I have not had so much as the common cold in 5 years since I began. I follow a Biblical based diet.
5) Did you experience any setbacks along the way? If so, what were they and how did you get past them?
I mean I struggled at the beginning but never quit. I can't remember the specifics; cigarettes were the hardest to quit. Smoked for 30 years. Been smoke free for 6 years this January 1st.
6) What type of training plan has worked best for you?
One body part a day with Sundays & Wednesdays off. Cardio 4-5 days a week. The heart is the most important muscle and most don’t include it as a body part. Try to work out with a weak one or none. LOL
7) What type of nutrition plan has worked best for you?
Biblical based diet. 80-90% of diet is organic fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, lean protein.
8) What muscle building and/or fat loss supplements have you used? Which ones worked for you and which ones didn’t?
I only use natural products. NOW 100% Whey Isolate Protein and I add NOW powdered Glutamine. A greens super food and Radical Reds.
9) What are your future fitness goals?
I might do a bodybuilding contest in about a year.
10) What are the top 3 tips you would give to others who are interested in beginning a muscle building and/or fat burning program?
1) Cardio is a must.
2)
Change your routine. I do 3 weeks heavy and 4th week high reps, changing exercises all the time.
3)
Never quit!!
