INTERVIEW

1) Can you tell The M.F.I.C members a little bit about yourself?

I am a 31 year old optometrist from Iowa. I was a two sport NCAA athlete and became interested in fitness and bodybuilding through athletics and a desire to maximize my potential.

I was over weight as a youth and was never “gifted” in the sense that I could eat what I wanted and still look good. I was very involved in lifting and running until I suffered a stroke in June of 2005 and was told that I may not able to lift again. I grew depressed and gained a lot of bodyfat.

I then decided that only “I” could control my destiny and if I wanted to look and feel good again, then I had to take control of my life and stop feeling sorry for myself.

2) What were your initial motivations for transforming your body?

I had always wanted to be in great shape and feel good, but after my stroke it was to prove something to myself, to see what I was capable of. I had felt that I wasn’t going to get another chance and when I did I never looked back!

3) How long have you been on your program for and what kind of success have you experienced so far?

My “program” changes constantly but the principles never do. Eat right, train hard, be patient, and look at each day as a victory if you do things correctly. By doing this, going to the gym when you don’t feel like it, passing the fries for a sweet potato, are all “mini” victories and fuel the engine to keep you progressing. It is a journey.

4) How has this success changed your day-to-day life for the better?

It has made me appreciate how lucky I am to HAVE the opportunity to train and look better. Many don’t realize that. Most of us have that choice, many others don’t for various health reasons and when I got sick, I knew how precious health truly is. The greatest benefit however has been helping and inspiring others to get back in shape.

5) Did you experience any setbacks along the way? If so, what were they and how did you get past them?

ABSOLUTELY!! I still had cravings and sometimes they beat me. I also broke down in tears the first time I ran after my stroke because I was so afraid of pushing too hard and losing my life or ability to function. That’s okay and many must realize that we all have set backs in different ways.

One bad day or meal doesn’t ruin your progress! Just like one workout doesn’t get you in shape! I had to always look at myself in the mirror and remember how I felt when I couldn’t train, or was afraid to. Like I said, each day is a battle until you realize you're winning, and then it isn’t so hard. EVERYBODY has set backs, the ones who prevail forget about them and keep pushing.

6) What type of training plan has worked best for you?

Cardio in the AM before I eat when insulin is non existent and fat is easy to tap into. Training each body part once per week very intensely. You must force the body to change. I train more intensely than more often as all I am trying to do is stimulate the body to change. My workouts always change but each one is always intense and challenging.

7) What type of nutrition plan has worked best for you?

Eating six meals per day, with most of my carbs surrounding the workout. Taking one cheat day per week to refresh my mind and enjoy life. Consume at least 1g of protein/pound of body weight, carbs around 1.25 and fats about 50g per day. YOU MUST consume 10-15% of your calories from healthy fats or your body will suffer.

8) What muscle building and/or fat loss supplements have you used? Which ones worked for you and which ones didn’t?

I like whey protein because nothing gets to my muscles faster following a workout. Glutamine is a great way to stay healthy and regulates protein synthesis. Creatine gives me energy and more pump. Omega 3’s are great for overall health and wellness.

MANY MANY supplements are all hype. The ones I use are proven time and time again and the basics are all you need. Diet is 75% of what we look like…period! No suppplement can fix that.

9) What are your future fitness goals?

To help as many people as I can reach their goals. I was so passionate about this that I spent the past two years authoring a book called “Transformation: Unlock Your True Potential”. It was published in April of this year. I am very proud of it and truly believe it will allow anybody to understand how foods affect them, when to eat, what to eat, how to train and how the body adapts to that training. It covers supplements, cardio, training, diet and my personal programs and story about my stroke:

10) What are the top 3 tips you would give to others who are interested in beginning a muscle building and/or fat burning program?

1) Stay consistent: the stream always wears the rock down through the years. Not because it is stronger... just more consistent.

2) Never stop believing you can attain what you see in your mind as your goal. You can get there... just keep pushing!

3) Stay away from those who make you feel bad about yourself or what you are trying to accomplish. Just smile and say thank you. They have created yet another motivator you can put in your pocket.
