INTERVIEW

1) Can you tell The M.F.I.C members a little bit about yourself?

I'm a Certified Personal Trainer, Spinning Instructor and Nutriton and Wellness Specialist, who is majoring in Kinesiology at University. My passion for fitness started young when I joined a gym (at 14 years old) within walking distance of my high school. I hooked up with a personal trainer there who then became my mentor and best friend. From there, I decided that the health and fitness lifestyle was one I wanted to pursue in university and in life. At 16 though, an eating disorder consumed my life. I barely ate, exercised obsessively, and got myself hospitalized twice.

2) What were your initial motivations for transforming your body?

I would go to bed at night, with an empty stomach, dreaming about the food I could have eaten that day. My body grew progressively weaker and weaker and thinner and thinner, because I was over exercising but under eating. It was starting to take a toll on my mom and the rest of my family. It was the most awful feeling in the world. I knew I had to make a change, when I'd hear my mom cry herself to sleep because she was actually scared of losing me.

3) How long have you been on your program for and what kind of success have you experienced so far?

I've been on my program for almost 3 years now, and have had immense success so far. I put on a total of 65lbs in exactly 2 years, while getting myself into a healthy bodyfat range that is still very lean for a female, and I've spent the last 18 weeks slowly cutting down to about 130 for a bodybuilding competition in November.

4) How has this success changed your day-to-day life for the better?

I no long worry about my body shutting down on me because I don't nourish it properly. I have a much healthier, more balanced attitude about life and fitness, and my passion is no longer an "obsession", so I'm not hurting those around me with my diet and training methods.

5) Did you experience any setbacks along the way? If so, what were they and how did you get past them?

A huge setback for me was not going near the scale for 2 years. My then plan, when I decided to get rid of my eating disorder, was to go on a slow, lean bulk, without using the scale (because that's what got me in a lot of trouble in the first place). But I never anticipating getting my weight up to 165, that was just an unreal number for me. So it was a setback emotionally because I freaked out about it and got really down on myself.

6) What type of training plan has worked best for you?

When trying to put on size, I would use a 4 day, upper/lower body split. Upper body on Mondays and Thursdays, Lower body on Tuesdays and Fridays.

About 5-6 exercises in total, 3-4 sets of each exercise, 8-10 reps per set. When prepping or my contest, I'd train 5 days a week: Chest, Legs, Back, Shoulders, Arms. 7-8 exercises per session, 4-5 sets per exercise, 10-20 reps per set (depending on whether I was supersetting, giant setting or straight setting).

7) What type of nutrition plan has worked best for you?

Low carb all the way, even when I was putting on size. I eat higher fat + protein, low carb year round. The only difference between off-season and pre-contest is how frequently I had my cheat days or carb up meals. Off-season, I would have a massive (about 400g) carb meal, and pre-contest from weeks 18-10, I would have 1 cheat meal a week. And weeks 10-1, no cheat meals.

8) What muscle building and/or fat loss supplements have you used? Which ones worked for you and which ones didn’t?

I have used Scivation's Xtend, which is the best branched chain amino acid/glutamine product out on the market right now. When trying to build muscle, it's amazing for protein synthesis, and when dieted, it's your best friend because it preserves muscle so you don't lose any of your hard earned lean body mass. Xtend follows me around EVERYWHERE! For fat loss, I used Scivation's Dialene 4 and VPX's Meltdown. Both of which where VERY effective.

9) What are your future fitness goals?

I would like to be an IDFA (International Drug Free Athletes) Pro by earning my pro card on November 8th. From there, I'd like to win a pro show. After that, I just want to continue with my person training business, and being a helpful ambassador of the sport.

10) What are the top 3 tips you would give to others who are interested in beginning a muscle building and/or fat burning program?

1) Take a branched chain amino acid product, like Xtend. Whether your goal is fat loss or muscle gain, BCAAs are a health and fitness athletes best friend.

2) Take care of yourself (go to your doctor, get blood work, relieve stress, etc.); don't neglect your health, because it may catch up with you later in life.

3) Have a strong group of people standing behind you to support you. If it wasn't for my friends and family, I probably would still be stuck in the vicious vortex of my eating disorder with no escape. But they were they for me and supported me, and I made it through.
